Over the past century, cities across the globe have kept rising and rising with more skyscrapers reaching up to the heavens. Although this has led to an increase in the density of populations and more pollution, the resulting skylines can be striking and beautiful. Here are a few of our favourites.
New York
New York is arguably the first truly great skyline in the world, as a leading force in the vertical construction of towering skyscrapers. From the iconic ‘Lunch atop a Skyscraper’ photo to the imposing Empire State Building, New York’s concrete jungle has to be at the very top of this list.
Rio de Janeiro
Rio de Janeiro is blessed with one of the most dramatic and breathtaking settings in the world which complements the skyline. Underneath the looming Christ The Redeemer, a colourful city spreads out, flecked with golden beaches and yachts in the bay.
Singapore
As the second-most densely populated country on the planet, there are plenty of high-rise buildings in the city-state of Singapore which create a dramatic skyline. The three-pronged Marina Bay Tower is the most expensive building in the world, with a flat observatory at the summit to look out across the city.
Dubai
The rise of Dubai has been stunning over the past ten years or so. Only a couple of decades ago, the area was largely desert and is now one of the most visited cities in the world, let alone the Middle East. The skyline is most famous for the sheer height of the buildings. The world’s tallest building, The Burj Khalifa, pokes through the clouds, along with a number of other buildings, leading to some truly remarkable images of a city seemingly inhabiting in the upper atmosphere.
